Huge selection of goods.
Notice the almost empty aisles in every photo.
At the first few MAX shows, you could barely get down the aisle through the throngs of attendees.
Tables that originally sold at about $100 (First couple of MAX Shows) and soared eventually in cost to $175 (more for wall tables), are now apparently about $100 again, from what I heard.
Where are all those buyers? Why are they not there in droves? |

A pretty astute observation Nr1Seller! I was there for a while Saturday and it looked about like that. Notice the guy in second picture with the black shirt. Looks bored to death to me. Mostly a lot of looking and chatting with, from what I saw, little buying and selling. One reason there isn't more activity is probably because the prices of everything are sky high. I saw a couple of things that I would have liked to have but couldn't stand the tariff. I wonder if these dealers are hiking their prices just for this show?
Considering the cost of going to these shows I think I would probably be smarter to just use the net for my shopping. But, I'll probably try to go again next year anyway. Just can't stand to stay away on the chance that there may be something I can get. |

The dynamics have changed over time. It has always been more expensive than any other show. In the early years you could find amazing stuff and often at very good prices.
In the early years, the show was held in different cities to keep things fresh. The idea was to encompass the nation and build a strong following.
The dealer who could afford $175-$250 per table and was selling $50,000 and more, would always show up to make those dollars. Foreign collectors and dealers could fly to most any city with ease.
The dealers still show up in sufficient numbers, but significantly less tables are sold now, than in previous years, I am told.
The price structure born of the 3 piece suit and diamond rings mentality, has alienated the common collector. Not everyone is able to afford going to the super bowl, because the cost is too high to bear. It can cost you a couple of tunics, visored hats, daggers, or whatever, just to be there for the weekend and do your thing.
With dealers re-stocking products the first day, power picking the best deals early, and aisles empty of buyers, how can you do much of anything there?
I saw a posting on that other forum last night, and the collector was delighted to have gone and bought some bargain nic nacs. I guess he was there to absorb some of the great kharma, and bask in the glow of the luminaries. I am guessing he just paid admission, and walked around his 'local show'.
Pretty expensive window shopping or museum visit, after paying those hotel, food, gas, tables, $32 airport shuttle, and other costs.
The high cost of participation has alienated the public and a lot of the smaller volume sellers. Nobody's fault really, just the reality.
I estimate that 90% of the business there is dealer to dealer. Dealers show up with the latest batch of supplies, their connections need for selling over the next months between re-supply shows. The big deals go down and the rest is them buying up all the good values they can find. |

| Thats so true that the max show has been falling by the way side for years. Has setting up some convoluted boys club certification helped? Not as far as anyone who can see the truth of what really goes on. Saddly what was ones the BEST show in the hobby, has now fallen to its knees, soon to fall to the ground, that is UNLESS the persons running the show start acting like the - COLLECTORS - are what make the show, - NOT The boys club that make up the DEALERS within said club. On a positive note, When one door closes an other one opens.. |
