I bought the following original items, for these prices.
Bevo Ski Jager Patch $3
Bevo Ski Jager Patch $10
Flatwire Skull Cufftitle $200
Luft General Cello Breast Eagle $5
Army mint Double Decal M-35 Helmet $150
Mint SS Cap Skull 499/41 $8
Luft Dbl Decal DAK Tan M-35 Helmet exc. $185
Mint unissued water pattern Luft Ground Combat coat $300
Regardless the year, those prices are absurdly low. So yes there is always a chance.
These crosses are so valuable that anyone considering acquiring one should be prepared to be able to ascertain the originality them selves. There are books and sections of books that can be a great resource for the process of figuring an item out.
There are photos online, and examples in collections. Collectors often are willing to help others, and can be contacted for support.
A cross is a cross in pictures. Therefore a buyer must go through the process of vetting it. Getting more pics is a must. Then comparing the item to known originals is important and lets you discover the little details that make the situation clearer.
There is no way to call an under priced seller a crook, simply because of the price. There is no reason to remove the listing unless there is something obvious about the piece that conclusively proves it bad.
Even the most perfect item could ultimately turn out to be 'questionable', or even replica. The worst thing is that even a GENUINE 100% legitimate item, is often branded as a fake by some 'expert'.
If it 'Is different from the one in the book', or 'Is different from the one I saw once', it is proclaimed from the pages of a forum that it is a fake. Also the seller will be permanently considered a bad guy as gossiping collectors spread the gospel, and save the world.
It is interesting to note that if later evidence, research , or a big vet acquisition prove some pattern of an object to be genuine, it is never 'trumpeted from the tower' or any apologies offered.
It is great that fakes are removed from this site, but that does not mean we can all buy anything without any effort to be informed collectors.
In case some new collector has not heard the news yet, THE HOBBY HAS BEEN FULL OF FAKES FOR 50 YEARS! It is up to every collector to assure himself that every item is legitimate. Buy the item and know what you are buying. The story costs you nothing, and that is exactly what the story is worth.
Any seller should give you at least a week to examine and accept the item. They should offer a 'no reason needed to return it' guarantee that is honored if the item is returned unaltered and postmarked within that inspection period.
Any SELLER unwilling to give that level of service, should be avoided.
Any COLLECTOR, not willing to verify the piece and own it after the inspection period, should not collect. |
