The other day I got a phone call from a collector who was ''thinking'' about joining our site. He wanted to know if I ''guaranteed'' everything on the site was original and if I ''guaranteed'' that every seller was honest. Get real! I told him about what we did to try to keep the site clean and suggested he look at our forum. I explained how we remove fakes when we can and get rid of any members who pull dirty tricks. I don't think he was satisfied with that... he hasn't joined. I hope he finds the site he is looking for... I sure would like to hear about it.
I had another member remark to me that he had noticed something about the site. He said that when a fake showed up for sale that sometimes it remained on the site for a couple of days before we removed it. He's right. In a perfect world they wouldn't appear on our site at all. In a near perfect world they would disapear as soon as they're posted. Unfortunately, we don't live in either of those worlds. In our imperfect world they often set for a while.
Deleting someone's ad is something I don't like to do. First, I take the chance of offending them and second, there is the chance that I might be wrong about the piece. The last thing I want to do is delete something for being fake when it's actually original. In an effort to be fair and correct I usually get other opinions before I act, and this can take some time. I email my ''advisors'' about the piece and have to wait for them to reply. I don't pretend to know everything as my collecting was always limited to a few specific areas, and I haven't been actively collecting myself for quite a while, so I'm not up on some of the latest scams. Therefore some pieces set while a decision is made. As a matter of fact there are a couple of pieces on the site right now that I'm waiting to hear about.
I've said it before and I'll say it again.... It all comes down to each collector making up his own mind. I can only do so much at this end. You have to do your homework and know your stuff before you buy. It would be good if more collectors would use this forum to ask questions about pieces and give opinions. For some reason only a small percentage of the people who read this forum are actually members and do postings. Too bad, it could be such a great resource.... |
